What the best red velvet cake recipe?

There are many excellent velvet cake recipes out there but to me there’s something special about this one in particular.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 ounces red food coloring
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar


Red Velvet Cake Recipe Baking Steps:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl, cream your shortening, sugar cocoa powder and food coloring till they are light and fluffy then add your beaten eggs one at a time and keep mixing. Add your salt, vanilla, buttermilk, flour vinegar and baking soda and incorporate completely.
  3. Pour the batter equally into two round 9 inch non-stick baking pans lightly coated with baking spray.
  4. Bake for 30 minutes or until your cakes pass the “toothpick test”. Cool the cakes completely before topping them with icing.


Icing Ingredients:

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup milk
  • 5 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white sugar


Icing Preparation Steps:

  1. Combine the milk and flour in a small saucepan and cook over a low heat until it thickens (stir constantly).
  2. Cream butter, vanilla and sugar in a medium sized bowl until light and fluffy then add the warm liquid ingredients and continue to mix thoroughly until the icing is spreadable.
